Run Smart Without Running!
I taught the first of a six-week block of ‘Run Smart’ sessions this evening. These sessions are aimed specifically at runners and work on key areas of mobility, stability and strength. There was no running involved nor will there be any running involved in the five subsequent sessions.
The program is all about putting the foundations in place to build efficient, injury free runners. On the surface, the exercises look simple enough, but by slowing things down, dysfunctional movement patterns become apparent and compensatory strategies highlighted. Some of the group nailed the exercises whilst others arrived with existing knee, hip or back ‘issues’ necessitating the need to modify some exercises and causing some comedy moments as they realized their limitations. Hopefully, they have gone away with a better idea of where their weaknesses lie and, in the following sessions we will work to address the imbalances.
